Mazda Mazda6 (V6)? Who can tell me about it?
Is it a fun car? Is it worth putting some money into it? Will it last long? Is it a good 1st car? 2004 or 2005 year.
I own a Mazda 3, however, I am fairly enthusiastic about the overall Mazda line and I know a few things from concentrating my interest with this particular brand. When I purchased my car it was in 2005. As you know, car brands build on previous models and incrementally improve the batch of cars by evolution and integration of improved manufacturing techniques. I recently went to the dealership for a car wash on a very cold day. I decided to look at the Mazda 3, with it's now trademark smile front fascia. I sat in it, talked to a few of the shop guys I know, really inspected the car at close range, by touch feel and comparing what I know about my car.
The new Mazda 3 is a vast improvement over the 05 Mazda 3. It is simply a better car. I am taking the scenic route in answering your question for a reason. Nevertheless, the new Mazda 3 is vault-like in the feel and construction reinforcements based on the old body style. The instruments have a simplistic sophistication, and a snick when knobs are turned and a solid thump when the doors are closed. It is an outstanding value, by any standard. Mazda has an obsession in meticulous improvements to their car line. The spend on the improvement to the car is well spent and obvious.
I can say the exact same for the current Mazda 6. In hindsight, the question you raise is about the 04-05 Mazda 6. The bones of the new Mazda 6 are based on the earlier version of the Mazda 6. Mazda had a best in class product in 04-05 in the Mazda 6, if you go back and read the competitive literature in car magazines this would be verifiable. They took a critical look at Mazda's claims and test them on the road for performance , reliability, confidence factors, fit and finish and engineering. Wards annually ranks the best engines, Mazda 6 engine is in the top ten. Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Automobile and Britain's Honest John all test the Mazda 6 and it is best in class based on Mazda claims and their test results. The model year for the Mazda 6 you raise was best. The 2010 Mazda 6 is superb.
With routine maintenance, the car is engineered to be a 10 year 275,000 mile car before any major repairs. On the question of putting money into it. It depends what you want to do with it. Mazda has a formula based on engineering specs, for oem manufactured parts. If you change parts, then you tinker with the equation for the car's reliability and performance. What I have learned is that Mazda parts have a spec range for tolerance and will last based on the sum of the parts. What you have to figure out will be, how do you stay within range of the manufacturer specs, based on what you want to do with the car.
The best approach is to either purchase the Mazda upgrade performance parts and/or understand the specs for the Mazda performance parts and get a similar spec part that accomplishes the same goal without paying a premium. For instance, Mazda has a cold air intake, AEM manufactures Mazda's cold air intake. I can pay the premium price for Mazda's cold air intake, or AEM's more suitable price for the same product. Mazda will blame any failure on the AEM CAI, but if you know the specs of both you can show them that they are wrong, so fix my brakes. Keeping that in mind, having modified my car extensively, it is a fun car, it is worth putting money into it and mine will last longer with trouble free miles, based on how I have taken care of it.
My advice to you is to pay close attention to the fluids in the car, put the best that you can afford in the car and stay ahead of major fluid changes. No matter how great the car, it runs on fluids. Develop an understanding of synthetic oil and transmission and radiator fluids and apply that knowledge knowing that your car will run smoother and cooler, based on the fluid technology that is now available to the buying public. Synthetics are great, but nothing beats routine maintenance. Cheers.
