Problem bumping music?
Ok I have 2 kicker l7 15s d2s and a 2000 watt rms amp wired to 1 ohm its 1 ohm stable anyway i dont exactly know what the problem is i have 1 guage amp wiring and 10 gauge for my subs anyway When i bump my music (my gain is set correctly, bassboost on the lowest) my whole car lightening and headunit dim increadibly and the clock almost goes barely see-able, the break lights and stuff go so dim its like theyre not even on in day light, also after a while my bass kinda cuts off for like 10 seconds then comes back on, and when im idling at a traffic light pounding my system my car engine just turns off, Sometimes my car is unwilling to start up, whats the problem? My friend says my amplifier might be dodgy and might explode.
That's a whole lot of power. The problem is a few things:
1) You need a better battery to run an amp like that (read Optima Yellow Top). You'll kill your alternator trying to run that much current through a standard battery. That's why your car stalls at idle. The alternator isn't spinning fast enough (engine @ low RPMs) to keep the battery charged enough to power the amp. Once the battery drains, the car dies.
2) You need a capacitor or two, on the order of 2-4 Farads. This will trickle drain your battery so that the battery doesn't see the full effect of the subs hitting. When the subs hit for some deep bass, the amp draws a ton of current (2000W max / 12V = about 170 amps). The battery and alternator will really strain trying to do that more than once (like repeatedly for music). The capacitor will create a slow draw from the battery and then provide those high current bumps when you need them.
3) You should take off your alternator and bring it into Sears or some such place and make sure it's not already fried. If it is, replace it with an upgraded one, rather than the stock amperage one.
Chances are your amp is fine.
