Sorry you're having problems. It's a long careful process to troubleshoot problems like these, but this is basically my process.
First are you running OS X? If so, your computer *might* be ok, if you let it do its thing.
What I mean is, with OS X, when the computer crashes and the hard drive doesn't properly shut down, it can get write errors. So when the computer starts up and gets to the gray Apple screen it will check if there was an improper shut down. If there was, the OS will check the hard drive for write errors. If it finds one it will attempt to correct it. It can take a long time (sometimes over 20 minutes) for the OS to run this and fix it. I've had several people bring me computers experiencing the exact thing, and simply waiting for the hard drive to finish it's work was all the computer needed.
There's a simple way to check if that is the case. Listen closely to the computer while it starts up. If while you're on the gray screen you can hear the hard drive doing lots of work (it'll sound like rapid clicking) then let it keep going. Be patient and wait and your computer will be back. I've seen this occur several times.
On the other hand, if you hear the hard drive whir up, click for a bit then stop, and repeat this cycle over and over. That is the sound of a permanently broken hard drive. And you'll need a replacement.
Lastly, while on the gray screen, if you don't hear anything, the problem may lie somewhere else. In that case you should try zapping the PRAM. This is done by starting the computer and immediately holding down Command+Option+P+R together. The computer will chime again when the zapping is done. Zapping the PRAM resets certain settings.
If you're still stuck you should boot from the Installer CD and run Disk Utilities and run both Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Don't install the OS or anything else until you know the hard drive is ok.
