Can a light switch be used in place of an outlet, if 3 outlets are on the same breaker?
My husband is trying to add lighting to the kitchen bar, there are 3 outlets on the same wall tied to the same breaker. He is trying to use one outlet and make it a switch, but it pops, and then won't turn off. What to do?
Your husband is wiring that switch wrong.
If it 'pops' and won't turn off, that switch is toast.
Get another one.
The proper circuit is:
a. black, (line), to switch pole 1. (If that black goes through to another outlet tie that wire
to the same side of the switch by tying the two blacks together and a third 'pigtail'
to the switch from one wire-nut).
b. from switch pole 2 one black wire, (switched power), to your lights.
c. from the white, (neutrals), in the box, (Tie all whites together with the right size wire-nut),
a white wire to the other side of your lighting.
d. all bare grounds get tied together, and tied to any green grounding screw on devices or lights
If there's more than two color wires in that box, (if there's a red eg.),
then more than one circuit breaker is involved.
Stop 'hubby' before he gets hurt.
