Do people like slight imperfections in their hand carved jewelry as in earrings?
I carve out of ivory from walrus tusks. I am an alaskan native so its legal. I made 2 pairs of earrings to see how they sell, one perfect pair of seals and another pair of seals that i skimmed through that had a few barely noticeable imperfections. The price was the same but the latter with slight imperfections sold the first half hour after the buyer looked at both. The better pair(in my opinion) sold a couple of days later. Why is this?
If people are looking to buy stereotypical Native stuff, like carved tusk jewelry, part of the "feel" usually involves having the piece look more handmade since most people aren't capable of perfection. When a piece displays little to no imperfection, it seems "fake" and "modern" to most people, which isn't what they want if they get Native stuff.
There are people who understand that perfection doesn't necessarily mean it isn't "real." It just means the artist is very skilled. On the other hand, imperfection is sometimes done on purpose for artistic effect. Flaws can be intentionally beautiful or a happy accident, but either way, some pieces simply look better without a "clean" and "polished" look.
Also keep in mind there's a chance that this is could be a one-time incident. Keep putting out what you're happy with next to artistically imperfect versions, and see whether the trend continues. If it does, you may have to save perfection for your personal collection and put the imperfect things in the store for people who like it better.
