In Los Angeles, CA on 9/12/08, a Metrolink commuter train crashed after the Engineer apparently ran a red signal and split a switch minutes before hitting a freight train going the opposite direction on single track. Is there any alarm in the cab when this happens? With up to 500 lives on each train, would that be a good idea?
Tracks are divided into sections called "blocks" and the signal system can automatically detect if a train is on a block because there are sensors on the track. The dispatchers can also also see and change the signals and switches remotely from a computer screen. (I've seen a Dispatch center, and it looks like an Air Traffic Control room). The signals are normally very reliable. They are designed so that if there is a problem with the signal (power failure, etc) they have a battery backup and will automatically show the most restrictive signal - a red light. Crews are also trained so that if a signal stops working completely (the light goes dark), they will treat it as a red signal and stop the train and contact the dispatcher for instructions.
Also, there is a system called an "Alerter" where the engineer has to press a button or switch periodically to be sure he is still alert and paying attention. If he doesn't press the button within a certain time, an alarm will go off in the cab. I don't know if all railroads use an Alerter, but I assumed that at least all passenger trains used it. Maybe not in this case, and that might have prevented the accident IF it turns out that it really was the engineer's fault (I have my doubts). Also, there is a system called Positive Train Control which will automatically stop the train if the Alerter alarm goes off or if the train runs a red signal.
There is a lot of speculation and rumors going around about what really caused the crash (including the bogus story about the engineer text messaging on his cell phone). I highly doubt that an engineer with over 10 years of experience driving passenger trains is going to be texting WHILE operating a train at over 40 MPH with over 200 passengers on board. And approaching a signal. There would have been two other signals MILES in advance. Probably a flashing yellow warning signal, and another yellow approach signal to warn him that he was approaching a red signal in the next block ahead. So he would have had to miss 2 advance signals before he even ran the red light. An experienced engineer ignoring 3 signals? I don't buy that. I think there is something else we don't know yet. Something else happened. We need to wait for a full investigation and all the details before anyone will know what really happened.
