Hmmm... ok how about this... I have a photo on my computer that I would like to take to one of those kodak photo center machines like they have at Wal-Mart. So basically what I want to know is what dimensions (in pixels in like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro) should I resize it to so that it will print out in good quality?
You're looking at the problem the wrong way.
Consider a 2 Megapixel camera or a 20 megapixel camera can take a photograph that can be printed nicely at 4 x 6". Much below 2 MP and you'll notice the pixelation.
On the other side of the equation, a good printer has a resolution of 1200 pixels/inch. A 4 x 6 photo at maximum resolution would be 34.6 Megapixels. Quadruple that figure for a 2400 dpi printer.
DON'T resize the image. Consider that an image is a set of data points -- *information*. The bread and butter of our computer age. Anything you do to that image will -- at best -- leave the amount of Information in your image the same. More likely, any resize -- either larger or smaller -- will reduce the amount of information in your image. Best bet is to take the original to the kiosk. Most kiosk print systems are smart enough to offer a "print to fit" feature, which will resize your image at the point it is printed -- where information loss is typically minimized and is always temporary.
