A car that's primer black vs a car that's primer white?
I'm about to buy a 68 firebird that's primer black, ready for a paint job. I was curious, however, does the color of the primer have any importance? Do they make certain color paints look better?
The reason is I'm planning a painting a nice, deep black, but I heard white primer makes the paint look "brighter". Is this true? Thanks.
no, primers don't have any effect whats so ever on the finished outcome, the only reason primers can be colored (and they can have any color in them) is for better coverage of the base coats and therefor cheaper because it is less coats to cover...
Example, if i have a black shade through my primer and went to paint it a white i would (depending on brand of paint) probably use about 3-4 coats after my mist coat before it was completely covered (mist coats help with better adhesion for following coat) , if i choose to paint it black instead, 2 coats after my mist coat would cover it, smash repairers do it to reduce material costs...
edit note : Shane A is correct, the primer used on it would be a high build primer ( a 2k filler primer ) and it is absorbent, but it wouldn't rust, the primer would have treated the steel..
What usually happens with jobs that have had primer on them for a good period of time is i would block the job back with about a 320 - 400 grit dry sand, then in the booth for a short bake of about 60 degree celcuis for about 20 mins then clean and apply a thin coat of 2k primer ( about 4:1 w/ 30%) then let it air dry, guide coat, prep it the next day, clean surface(prepsol) spray a sealer, spray adhesion promoter then mist coat the color, 20 mins flash then start the coats process..
