In terms of gas mileage, reliability and looks.
The Ford Explorer did really well in that era. When they came out, just about everybody wanted one. They were strong, versatile, and had really good looks inside and out. I think it was '93-'95, somewhere in between, when they started using the SOHC(single-overhead-camshaft) engine. Although that engine is not 100% American, it still made a lot of improvements to customer satisfaction. I think it was two years ago that Ford made there five millionth Explorer. They praise that model since it sells so much; even during the gas crunch-not to say that it was a gas-guzzler. It's a really good pick for the best American SUV.
