I am considering the purchase of a Remington Model 700 in either 7mm Remington Magnum or 7mm-08. I did some research, but there are no real clear answers to the difference between these two cartridges. Does either one kill better for large game like Whitetail Deer ? What are the diffs between the two ?
Both shoot the same size bullet, a 7mm. The 7mm mag is a long action bullet that is considered to be a plains rifle. This is to say that is is a fast round that will keep a flat trajectory, over a greater distance.
As far as killing is concerned, both have the capability to penetrate through the biggest of bucks with ease. In fact they will both make the same wound chanel.
I have hunted White tail among other creatures for about 25 of my 39 years. I started with a .308, and then graduated to the 30-06. I have never needed anything more than the ought 6, and have found that in the lighter loads(150 grains), it has performed as well as any other caliber within the same distance(300 meters or less). In fact I would have killed the same animals with the .308 too. Also the longest shot I ever took on a White tail was about 200 meters. On average, the deer I killed was within 25 to 50 meters.
The 7mm-08 is a necked down .308, designed to get a bit better velocity out of a the .308 case, and hitting game with less energy and bullet weight, while recoiling less.
I would not buy the 7mm-08 as that the .308 in a light 130 grain Barnes X bullet out performes it in every aspect. Also the .308 costs less to shoot, and can be found just about in every sporting goods store.
I guess what I am saying is that I see the 7-08 as living in the shadow of the .308, and has lost popularity over the years. I prefer the 30-06 in a long action, and the .308 in a short action.
If a 7mm bullet is what you must have, go with the magnum. While the 7mm-08 will kill Elk, Moose, and other big game, it is a challange and a bit under powered. You may wish to hunt somthing bigger some day, why not get enough gun to do the job on much bigger game today, and never worry about the subject ever again.
Also keep in mind that if you want a gun that won't kick as hard, get what the pro's use, a 308. This caliber will offer super fast 110 grain bullets for long flat shots all the way up to 190 grain bullets for big game. You can not get this kind of versitility out of a 7-08.
