93 Mazda MX6 Mechanical Advise Needed!?
I recently purchased a Mazda MX6 2.0L 5Spd off of a friend. I purchased it as a project car. It ran roughly a month ago until the engine just stopped. It is NOT the timing belt, nor the Serpentine Belt, that has been checked. When the ignition key is turned, the engine cranks but does not turn-over. He stated that the mechanic he brought the car to told him that the engine was only gunked up and it needed the Oil Pump replaced. I brought it to my own mechanic and he agreed with the diagnosis. This is total gunkage inside of the engine. Please also know that the engine has over 200k and when the engine stopped, it was at a high RPM. So the question is this; Is the engine salvageable, and if so, how to do it?
Your description is confusing. "cranking" and "turning over" are the same thing. Even a severely gunked up engine should run. I would suspect muck inside the ignition distributor FIRST. Remove the cap and wash down with CRC CHLORINATED brake cleaner. This removes built-up interfering gunk that might have formed. Power wash the engine and look for signs of deteriorated electrical plugs. Clean them with the CRC spray. Wash the throttle body and plate with Gum-out spray to remove other contaminants. If it "cranks" but won't stay running, check the ignition coil for power. Also, check the fuel pump relay and fuse. Good luck!!
