I want to build my own Hummer H1 and would love to make it environmentally friendly. Looking for highest efficiency, lowest cost to run, and high mileage.
Since environmentally friendly is a relative term you have to go no further than pick something that is really dirty. You can currently say that compared to a container ship running bunker oil (equal to the pollution of 50 million cars) your Hummer is an environmentally friendly vehicle.1
Any vehicle running an internal combustion engine is not going to get more than about 30 to 40% efficiency out of the engine even it it is a highly tuned diesel. Because this kind of engine also requires a transmission to operate in a vehicle the tank to wheel efficiency is likely to be no better than 15% for any fueled vehicle. Electric vehicles at about 90% efficiency are the clear winners here.
The electric grid is becoming cleaner but that is not your present design concern. You have no control over refineries(2), oil spills (3), power plants or how electricity is produced. You can only affect your vehicle design. The only vehicle that produces zero emissions is an electric vehicle.
The electric vehicle requires no lubricants, filter changes, oil changes and it is the most efficient vehicle. If you had asked about the cost of conversion electric may not be the best choice, but for operating cost it is cheapest.
"High mileage" can mean one of two things. Most of the time we are referring to miles per gallon of fuel used or its equivalent. The electric is again the clear winner because it has the highest efficiency. This goal is also heavily dependent upon efficiency so you may be interested in the longest range without refueling. For this your present gasoline power plant would be good. Diesel may be slightly better with cooking oil comparable.
