can i mount t3500 Mazda diesel engine on my 30 foot wooden boat?
Anything is possible. You will need raw seawater inter cooler to replace the radiator - salt water through that engine will not work long-term so you will want to run coolant through the engine itself. Jabsco type vane pumps for the raw water supply, water jacket exhaust manifold and wet box for the used cooling water, modified sump for water cooling of the sump oil (use the coolant rather than raw sea water). You may have to remote mount the oil filter and arrange a sump pump for servicing the engine. Fuel filters and water trap are absolutely needed. This engine will not have a governor as such but will have a reasonably linear power output. Starter should be upgraded to sealed type - will be low in the boat so first thing to get drowned! Alternator could be upgraded to higher output type with better charge rate controller fitted. This engine can suffer from overheating of the piston crown if full output is demanded continuously, the engine should be used at a reduced speed setting of say no more than 75% to keep things controlled - it was never designed for the sustained high speed and high throttle settings output which a marine application demands. Efficiency? depends on your propping and throttle hand but with care should be fair to good. Exhaust muffler will need to be very unrestrictive, and the sizing of the tubing chosen for the exhaust run must be large to minimise back pressure and residual heat in the combustion chamber. The demands on the engine will be well outside of the design brief, but it will work with care.
