This is called factoring. I am assuming that you mean
2x^2, where the ^ symbol denotes an exponent?
To factor 2x^2 + 5x - 12, what I do is look for factors for the first and last term, then see what can be combined to get the middle term.
So, 2 is factored into 2X1 only, but 12 can be factored into 3X4, 2X6, 12X1. Don't forget that the 12 is negative, so one of those factor components must be negative. Now I use trial and error to see what combinations of the factors will give me a positive 5.
We know we must have (2x ) (x ) as a start, so one of the terms will be multiplied by 2. Let's go through them and see what might work. 2X2 is 4, but then that requires 1X6 = 6, and 6 and 4 cannot be combined to get 5. Ok, how about 2X6 = 12? That mist then be combined with 1X2 = 2, and again, we cannot get to 5. We have a similar problem with using 12X1. But, we notice that 2X4 = 8, and 3X1 = 3, which, with the proper placement of the negative sign, results in 5!
