HID conversion in a 2006 civic si, low beams and fog lights?
im looking to convert my headlights and fog lights in my 2006 civic si to hid lights. i don't know too much about what needs to be done, so i was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for good kits, or places to buy the kits and have them installed in the boston mass area.
i want to convert the low beams and the fog lights and im wondering if i will have any issue (especially with the fog lights) with the heat of the new bulb melting the light housing?
like i said im open to suggestion on what kits to buy (i think i want to get 8000k) and if you are familiar with the boston area (i live in foxboro) where would be a good place to purchase the lights and have them installed?
Thank you in advance for all of your suggestions
thanks that sounds great, i was actually thinking about either a combo with 8k low and 3k fog. i thought about matching them, but i do like the contrast in colors (typical si owner i guess)
thanks for all your help, here's your best answer
Most people buy the kits off ebay, which isn't a bad place to buy them. Stay away from the kits that are priced around $60-$100, even though they are cheap and look tempting to buy, offering a "Warranty" and what not, they aren't that great. Most of those ebay stores close down pretty fast or change names when customers start complaining or they are stopped for the sale of HID kits for non-off road use. (HID lights are illegal in most states for on-road use in cars not factory equipped with them - but many people use them anyway and don't get a ticket)
You won't have an issue with the heat, standard HID's run at 35w, most factory light bulbs run at 55w+ so your actually reducing heat while increasing light output. So don't worry about melting any of your headlights or fog lights (so long as they fit just like the factory bulbs do).
As far as colors go, 4300k offers the best of light, but its basically a bright white color, and most people want the blue look. I say go for 6000k headlights, they offer good visibility and yet you still get a hint of blue in them. 8000k's do look better, but light output is reduced greatly over both 4300k and 6000k kits. The best of color and output would be 6000k, and if you put that in both your fogs and your headlights you'll be looking good. The other thing (especially common with SI owners) is to put a 6000k or 8000k HID in the headlights, and throw in a 3000k (bright yellow) kit in the fog's, it looks really good and increases visibility, especially in rain and fog - that yellow cuts through it easy.
Installation is not that hard really, you can do it yourself. ask for help at http://www.8thcivic.com/ or search the site for guides on how to do it, i'd imagine they have a guide for the headlights, dunno about the fogs. It's pretty simple though, you basically install a ballast and connect that to your factory headlight plugs, then you install bulbs that run a wire from the ballast to the headlight. Just gotta find a good place to mount those ballasts.
also, if you start getting high beamed (Which you might) adjust your headlights down more. HID kits are really bright in non-projector housings and can blind oncoming drivers or drivers your driving behind. (pretty much the reason why they are illegal).
