97 Ford Probe GT cylinder head?
So this is a question for any good ford or mazda techs that know the KL series 2.5L motor. As few may know there is a japan version of this motor often advertised as jdm motor, they make roughly 200 horse vs the normal 2.5 making 165. this motor is a KL-ZE, has 10:1 comp with better flowing heads, different cams, and better intake design. KL-31 is stamped on the cams and heads instead of KL-01, anyways my question is are these two different cylinder heads castings the same? the KL-31 heads have larger rectangular ports vs round oval ports of the KL-01. to smooth this out more i have found 1 kl-31 head and am wanting to get a regular kl-01 head and port match it to it. thus why i need to know if the castings are the same and i can safely remove that much material? some idiot at junkyard F'ed up the other head. any input appreciated
They are different parts, it is cheaper that way then to have them reworked.
As for can the material be removed to port the head to match the new profile.
I have no guess. It would depend on how far you go back to match the ports. Remember the combustion chamber is under them and there is a cooling jacket for water in there too. When porting an engine sometimes a competition engine builder will have the area either UT's or RT's to make sure of wall thickness.
If you want a smaller combustion chamber, the heads can be milled on the low compression heads. But how much I am not sure.
