please give me estimates on what it would cost to build these and how long?
a 90s miata transfering a 20btt if possuble if not a 13btt im getting engine and tranny from jdm dad is a mech. and i know alot we have all the tools and could we register this car when we were done and the engine wont be stock but i have those cost estimated i plan 2 t4s and a custom exhaust will these cause problems when registering car?
The great thing about registering a vehicle is they are going to ask for the VIN of the vehicle. In turn they will register the vehicle with the engine that was installed originally.
The only time that this may not be the case is if you do not have the title to the car and are forced to apply for a title bond. Unfortunately in this case the car will be inspected copiously and if you live in california you must make sure that the engine code is that of a USDM variant of either of these because if it is not it will not pass emission inspection in CA because of the fact that the engine was not engineered to meet CARB standards and regardless of the fact that the engine will typically meet NOx emissions concentration standards easily, it will not pass the inspection process for the lovely fact that when legislation was passed for these sorts of standards in Cali, the politicians could not spell JDM let alone understand what it meant.
Luckily enough both of the engine codes were released for at least one generation of the RX7 meaning that you have a shot of making it work. As for the difficulty of installation of either, it is going to require a full rewire of the harness, which if you are getting full engine and tranny, then most likely you have an intact harness to accompany them so this should be no problem given the fact that your dad is a mechanic.
One thing that I would be leery of and I say this meaning no discredit to your father, it would behoove you to do a lot of research on rotary motors. Like I said not saying that your dad has a lack of knowledge or experience, but in the case of a rotary motor, having a lot of experience can actually be a disservice if rotary is not part of that experience because they are a very different animal when it comes to tolerances and balance not to mention the moving components of the engine itself.
I must say though, when you complete the project that is going to be phenomenal car, with the weigh balance and exquisite aerodynamics of the car it is going to be not only a very potent street car but one that will perform exceptionally on the track with a fair amount of practice, I say this also not to discredit your driving skill but if you have ever driven a Rx7 with the twins you know that it has a very linear power band and even stock the motor is very strong given the fact that the FD chassis is about 900lbs. heavier than that of the miata. With the practice though it will be a force to be reckoned with.
In the grand scheme of things, it should cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-7k depending on where you get your parts from considering that you are doing the labor yourself.
I estimate that because I would recommend not installing bigger turbos for the sheer fact that the car will be unpleasant to drive because it will already be pushing near 300 hp with very simple mods in a car that weighs roughly 2300 pounds.
If it says anything, I built a 400 horsepower neon SRT4 for a friend of mine without a limited slip differential and it was mildly unpleasant because of the fact that the car didn't weigh enough to hold that kinda of power and it weighs a lot more than a miata.
You can't really open it up in any gear without blistering the tires off the rim. It makes it impossible to enjoy it because you will get outrun by much weaker cars because you cant use the power you have becuse of a lack of traction even with a ridiculously high performance tire.
For example we were running Toyo Proxes R888's which are almost a full-race compound super sticky tire and they wouldn't hold completely.
I wish you the best of luck with the project though, after the headache and the busted knuckles it will bring you a great amount of enjoyment other than the speeding tickets that you will probably acquire in the pursuit of your enjoyment lol. Good luck, have fun, and drive it like you stole it.
