I have heard that in some states this is illegal and I just wanted to be sure because I drive with my dog often.
Also, do you recommend using dog seat belts to protect your dog because I worry sometimes about his safety.
I live in New Hampshire. I am not sure if anyone will know this in detail.
In regards to the state of New Hampshire, this is the only legislation regarding the "transportation" of dogs in any kind of vehicle. However, this particular legislation refers to a pickup truck, but I would assume that all points of this legislation apply:
I. No person driving a pickup truck shall transport any dog in the back of the vehicle on a public way, unless the space is enclosed or has side and tail racks to a height of at least 46 inches extending vertically from the floor, the dog is cross tethered to the vehicle, the dog is protected by a secured container or cage, or the dog is otherwise protected, in a manner which will prevent the dog from being thrown or from falling or jumping from the vehicle.
II. Notwithstanding paragraph I, this section shall not apply to the following:
(a) A dog being used by a farmer or farm employee while actually engaged in farming activities requiring the services of a dog; or
(b) A hunting dog being used at a hunting site or between hunting sites by a licensed hunter who is in possession of all applicable licenses and permits for the species being pursued during the legal season for such activity.
III. Any person who violates this section shall be guilty of a violation.
Notice how it says "the dog is otherwise protected, in a manner which will prevent the dog from being thrown or from falling or jumping from the vehicle"? As long as the dog cannot be thrown, fall, or jump out of the vehicle, I would assume it is perfectly safe to allow your dog to sit in the front seat. I would advise caution, however, that you make sure your dog knows better than to interrupt you while you are driving.
In regards to your dog's safety, I would suggest that you take advantage of a good restraining harness. This would prevent your dog from being thrown about, but not many dogs accept these very easily as they like their freedom of movement, despite having a difficult ride.
