Why did both of my headlights go out at the same time?

could it be the driving through the mountains from 8500-5300 feet?
They were probably made by the same manufacturer with the same specifications including expected lifetime and both were probably installed at the same time. And its probably just a coincidence that they went out at same time. I think the bulbs are enclosed in air tight glass enclosures so the altitude shouldn't affect them. That said, maybe there is pressurized gas like zeon or something in the bulbs and at the higher altitude - and thus lower atmospheric pressure - the bulb exploded. Maybe you should contact the manufacturer and ask. I smell lawsuit! lol Don't be frivolous but I think they should make the bulbs work in higher altitudes and if you were on a narrow mountain road at night, that could have been deadly.
