Should I go with a carburetor or fuel injection set up?
Hi, I have a 1990 Chevy Camaro RS, I recently droped a 355/5.7L engine in it and now I'm trying to decide what would give the car the most performance/power, an Edelbrock 600-650cfm carburetor or a Holley fuel injection set up? I currently have a broken carburetor on it but when the guy installed the engine he didn't completely redo everything for it to be carbureted, he just simply put a fuel regulator on the fuel line and put a carburetor on it because it use to be fuel injection.
Depends on what sort of performance you want. A well tuned carb will do very well at the drags since it's only going to run at WOT.
Typically speaking, EFI will be better for daily driving and anything that requires part-throttle performance. This assumes that it is properly tuned which is not an easy feat. If you Turbo or Supercharge, Multiport EFI is the only way to go but that's some real money for a complete setup.
If street performance is your goal and have limited funds, a good carb will serve you just fine. It's fairly easy to convert an FI fuel system to be used on a carb engine. Just adding a pressure regulator may not do it though. You need to make sure that the fuel pump can handle the extra back pressure and large recirculation.
