My 06 Honda Civic Sedan: Only gets 23 mpgs?? Why is this?
I bought this car last week. It had 82,300 miles on it(which Im assuming is highway miles) and I did the math when I got my first and second tank of gas to see how many miles per gallon I get in this car. When I did the math, the results showed that I am only getting 23 miles to the gallon! Why is this? Do I need to replace spark plugs? My car should be getting way better mpgs than this! Its a 4 cylinder! HELP!
I did the math correct. I will show you how I did it:
1)First fill up at 82,320 miles.
2) Second fill up at 82,574 miles.
I put in 11 gallons on second fill up
3)82,574-82,320= 254
4) 254 divided by 11= 23.05 mpg
This is unacceptable. How can i fix this?
It depends on traffic and your driving style. Any car gets zero MPG stopped and idling in traffic so if you spend a time in traffic your "average" MPG drops dramatically. It might be your driving style. Frequent hard acceleration also kills mileage. Also, a couple of tanks may not be enough to tell. If the tank wasn't filled to the exact same level each time your calculations could have a large error.
I suspect that you would have a warning light if there was incomplete combustion so it's unlikely there's anything wrong with your engine. If you're unsure of when the plugs and filters were last changed it would be worthwhile to replace them anyway.
