I got a moving violation for running a red light, but the light was yellow when I entered the intersection. When I told that to the officer, he said that the light turned red while I was in the intersection and that I should have slowed down because of the yellow light.
If the light turned red when you were in the intersection, then you had enough time to stop. At least, that is what I would say to you if I were the cop.
What you can do, there should be a time where you could go to court to plea your case. If you can, go. The odds of that cop showing up is slim to none, because they have more important things to do that to sit at the courthouse, when they could be busting more bad guys, but go and argue your case to the judge. If the cop doesn't show up, the ticket could be thrown out, since the issuing cop isn't there to defend why he wrote you the ticket. If he doesn't show, you could simply tell the judge that you tried to stop, but felt you couldn't do is safely. I assume you didn't get a speeding ticket, so that would show that you didn't intentionally try to beat the light.
When I was in Alaska, people ran red lights all the time, simply because they slid through the intersection and couldn't stop. Of course, its probably not snowing where you are, but if it rained or if the road wasn't in great condition, then you could use that as an arguement too, saying that you weren't in the best position to stop, without losing control of the vehicle, and going through was your safest bet to avoid an accidents.
