i hav 04 rx8, it grind in 2nd gear..i replaced my clutch/ flywheel, still grinds only in 2nd is my tranny bad?

Sounds like your 2nd gear synchro (inside your transmission) is shot to me. It seems to be a common weakness on the FC/FD/FE. For now, you should try learning how to rev-match, it's not too hard to do. But make no mistake, your transmission needs attention and soon, and the ONLY people I would entrust it to is one of the knowledgeable Rotary Shops like the RX7 Store (www.rx7store.net), Banzai Racing (www.banzai-racing.com) or Mazdatrix (www.mazdatrix.com). Check www.rx7club.com for more reputable places.

Here's how to rev-match:
Go out to an open stretch of road and cruise along at around 2000rpm in 4th gear. Watch the tach as you downshift to 3rd. On my FC, the tach would climb to 3000rpm. To rev-match on a 4-3 shift, at 2000rpm in 4th gear, push the clutch in and downshift to 3rd. While holding the clutch in, push the accelerator down untill it hits 3000rpm and then release the clutch. The exact engine speed will vary depending on the gear ratios, but the process is still the same.: step on clutch, downshift, apply throttle to match speed, release clutch

For upshifting to 2nd with a dying synchro, you should try double-clutching. Using my FC as an example again, here's how to do it:
at 3000rpm in 1st gear, step on the clutch and shift to neutral, then release the clutch. Step on the clutch again and shift to 2nd. It may grind a little, but that's to be expected. You might want to add in rev-matching to help things mesh up better (rev to 2000rpm in my case)

If you're good with math, you can figure out the perfect way to rev-match by looking at the gear ratios. If memory serves, 4th gear on your FE is 1:1 and you should start off with 1000rpm to keep it simple. All you need to do is divide the RPMs by the starting gear's ratio, then multiply by the ending gear's ratio to find out the perfect rev-matching point.

On my FC, 4th gear is 1:1 and 5th gear is 0.697:1. If I'm cruising along at 3000rpm in 4th gear, I'd divide 3000 by 1 (4th gear ratio), then multiply by 0.697 (5th gear ratio). This results in 2097rpm in 5th gear, which is the exact same speed as 3000rpm in 4th gear.
