Valve Cover Screw bolt broke....help!?
...Alright. So I was tightening down the valve cover on my 93' Mazda Protege LX because I replaced the gasket. Well, I over torqed a valve cover bolt in the upper left hand most corner of the cover...and the bolt snapped. I know it can be taken out...thats a easy part. My question is about replaceing the bolt. Can a simple bolt of the same thread and roughly the same leanth work in place of the original? I mean...a bolt is a bolt, right? What do y'all think? Should I try to get an original bolt for the job or would a simple stainless steel bolt work from a hardware store?
I also am taking into consideration of the heat the bolts are subjected to. Does that change anything? Thanks for the answers so far by the way! I snapped when the screw snapped. Thanks for the help guys. I'll take all the answers I can get.
As long as it's the same size, thread and length, no problem. Valve or cam covers are low torque, non-load application so a plain, cheap bolt will be fine.
