Can somebody who knows computers tell me if this is a great desktop to buy for gaming and watching movies?

It's more than enough for watching movies, and will handle everything from streaming netflix to playing HD video files to playing DVDs/Blu-rays (if you decide you want to add a blu-ray drive).
As for gaming, it is a lower - mid range gaming machine.
The CPU is very powerful, but the graphics cards is somewhat lacking. A GT 240 is enough to play most modern games with, but don't expect high settings out of all your games. For older games or for casual gaming with the latest games, it should be enough.
If it worries you, you can upgrade to a GTS 450, which is a new Nvidia card. It's a mid-range mainstream gaming card. It is equivalent to the Radeon HD 5750 if you prefer ATI.
Slightly higher would be the GTX 460/465 or Radeon HD 5770/5830. These are higher mid-range cards.
A GTX 470 or Radeon HD 5850/5870 puts you in the upper-range.
A GTX 480 or 5970 puts you in the enthusiast level.

Note that high-end graphics cards will require more power, and that 500W power supply might not be enough.
