i have a carberated 13b 6 port Mazda rotary engine i am puting it in a 73 vw bug i have been told that if u leave the secondaries ports open u will lose power i want to make 200 hp i have all ready installed the pineapple racing selves i am not running a ecu of any sortjust a carb carberater
The purpose of the tertiary ports (5 & 6) is to allow increased airflow when the engine needs it...at high rpm.
At lower rpm having these ports open will decrease intake velocity which is as important as overall volume. The velocity of the intake charge will determine how well the combustion chambers fill. Higher velocity = more air/fuel mixture. Having too much intake capacity on a naturally-aspirated motor will reduce intake velocity and lower potential HP for the rpm ranges affected.
One common way people "feel" this is when you "stomp" the gas pedal as opposed to squeeze it open. Going directly to wide-open-throttle the engine will still accelerate but will sometimes feel sluggish for a moment until the rpm's rise. This is what happens when the intake charge velocity drops. When you "squeeze" the pedal down to WOT over a second or so the engine feels more lively and powerful because you're keeping the intake velocity high.
You will not lose HP in the high rpm ranges as the velocity will increase as rpm's rise, but you will lose low and mid levels HP.
