Can I use a car amp as a preamp for another car amp?
I have a low-power sub putting out 100w RMS (gain all the way up) to a sub which is rated about the same. It works well when my stereo is at high volumes, but then the mids and highs are too loud from the speakers. My stereo deck doesn't have a separate volume for the auxiliary out.
If I took another low-power amp, turned the gain all the way down, and fed the output into the speaker-level input on the second amp (the amp I'm currently using), would it work alright as a preamp? The first amp is only capable of doing 75w RMS, so I'm hoping that with the gain all the way down, it would be low enough to provide a boost without blowing my second amp.
Would this work? Thanks!
Without the specifications on the amps, it's difficult to say. Obviously, if you overdrive the inputs on the second amp, the obnoxious distortion will generally precede any damage to the amp and you'll know that it won't work right away.
Try it with the first amp's gain turned all the way down like you indicated in your question - if nothing else, you'll have a learning experience.
