Can a 2008 ford escape haul a 2005 mazda 3?
My Ford Escape is a v6 and I wanted to see if I could haul my Mazda 3 s. The Mazda 3 is a 4 door 4 cylinder car. I need to haul it from NY to CA and I want to see if I can. Also was curious to see if anyone has done such a haul.
The car weighs about 2900 pounds, the dolly you'll need to tow it with will weigh about 200 pounds. So at the very minimum you're at 3100 pounds. Realistically you're probably closer to 3200-3300 pounds. Factor in luggage or other belongings you're probably going to be taking with you, and you're overloading the vehicle. And then there's this tidbit (from the owner's manual)
"For high altitude operation, reduce GCW by 2% per 1000 ft.
(300 meters) elevation. For definitions of terms and instructions on
calculating your vehicle’s load, refer to Vehicle loading in this chapter.
Maximum trailer weights shown. The combined weight of the completed
towing vehicle and the loaded trailer must not exceed the GCWR."
If you're crossing the Rockies, then your towing limit goes from 3500 pounds to about 2950 pounds on account of the altitude. Which puts you well over the towing limit.
I don't think I would attempt such a long tow with an Escape. You will be near or over the towing weight limit.
